If you are growing up as a Malaysian Indian, one of the issues that you have probably seen or heard of is that, a temple related issue, in which a Hindu temple will be demolished. I was 14 when I first heard of such an issue, it was the start of Facebook and literally, lots of people were into Facebook and I saw pictures of demolished temples and the statues were in broken in half, some were in pieces. At that time, it was an Adolescence period and growing up being fed into on conservative way of Indian. I was very angry and I might have wished on how those did those will be paralyzed and how my god take revenge on them. But then growing further from period into my 20’s I realised how those wishes are just wishes and I was wrong for not seeing the other side of the issue. I started seeing the other side of this issue, thanks to my Father. He was not an avid supporter of the “Build Temple Everywhere “. He always felt that Malaysians had enough temples already and what needed to be spent on are schools and other Indian welfare activity.

Now, to the main issue I wanted to write here, a few days ago Sri Siva Sakthi Sri Karuppar Temple which was built over 80 years ago on a PRIVATE PROPERTY, was demolished and it got most Johor Indians on their feet and venting their fury on how Karruppu will not leave them alone. This temple was built over 80 years ago in a Palm Oil Estate, and Indians there felt in need of a temple and a temple was built on the land of-of others. Problems arise when in 1995 the land was bought by a new owner from the previous. It was to be noted that this temple was registered at 2006.(evidence of temple registration produced by temple management). However, it is to be noted that only temple’s organisation is being registered but not the land the temple was built on. Also when checked on Temple registration the temple was registered in one address(Taman Desa Jaya), but the temple was in place in another address(Bandar Seri Alam). It has been said that land developer has been sending eviction notice for a long time yet the temple management did not bother.

A long-standing battle between the land developer and temple management came to a climax a few days ago resulted in the demolition of the Temple. In that context, my point of view on this matter is that what has been the temple management doing for the past 30 years. Why did they not look for another land to build the temple on? Furthermore, it is not the only temple in the surrounding area. Just 4.4km from the temple there is another Indian temple and a lot more in the surrounding area. Why has to be some many temples built in the first place. You claim that Masjid’s don’t get demolished, but then you don’t see a Masjid built close to each other. I have seen Temples built very close to each other, I mean why built two when you can just have one temple.

There is a claim that surau were never demolished in Malaysia, but do you know that in Selangor, the year 2006 there was a bunch of surau demolished because they built it on Government reserved land. However, the issue did not get much viral as many were able to see the other side of the issue. There were not many complain about surau getting demolished, which is because they don’t just build a surau, they seek Jabatan Agama Islam who will help them get a land and help get donations and fund to build one for them. In contrast, our Indians build on a land which does not belong to them and will retaliate when asked to vacate. The solution on this matter, on my point of view, is to combine temples. By combining, what mean is that say we have a Murugan temple and an Amman temple with close why not make it a big temple with Amman and Murugan statues.

In conclusion, if someone wanted to build a temple make sure you built it on a LAND YOU OWN. Problems like this arise when Temples are built on a private property which they do not own. We do not live in the 15th century where we believe that land is owned by the Gods and Temple’s can be built anywhere. Have a proper registration and hire a lawyer for your temple management for any legal issues.
